Belayet Hossain, Staff Reporter || The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is considering a major reshuffle in its top leadership, with party insiders saying a decision has been taken to nominate incumbent Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for the presidency.If Fakhrul is nominated for the post, he may have to step down from his party position due to constitutional and legal requirements, according to the sources.Senior Joint Secretary-General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed is reportedly the frontrunner to take over as acting secretary-general if the position falls vacant.The issue of who could assume the acting secretary-general’s responsibilities has been discussed among the BNP’s policymakers, with Rizvi emerging as the most talked-about candidate.Rizvi, who also serves as the prime minister’s political adviser, has long been involved in the party’s central activities during its prolonged political movements. His role as a spokesperson during difficult periods has also reportedly strengthened his position with the party’s top leadership.Party sources said BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and senior policymakers have discussed Rizvi’s possible appointment positively. However, several other heavyweight leaders are also being considered, including Salahuddin Ahmed, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and Md Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee.Contacted about the matter, Rizvi said he had no specific information about either the reported presidential nomination of Fakhrul or the possibility of his own appointment as acting secretary-general.“No one has formally discussed the matter with me,” he said, adding that he would accept whatever decision the party’s top leadership takes regarding his role.The BNP last held its sixth national council on March 19, 2016. Although the party constitution calls for a council every three years, the next council has remained pending for around a decade for various reasons.According to party sources, however, there is a specific plan to hold the next national council by December. The party may elect a full-fledged secretary-general at that council.Until then, the BNP may appoint an acting secretary-general to maintain organisational activities and ensure continuity in the party’s operations, the sources said.
