Monir Hossain Patwari, Reporter || India has invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit the country for a bilateral engagement and attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi, its Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday.Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal disclosed the matter at the ministry’s weekly press briefing, saying separate letters had been sent to the Bangladesh prime minister for the two occasions.Responding to a journalist’s question about the invitation for Tarique’s visit to India, Jaiswal said the Indian high commissioner had met the prime minister on Monday and discussed issues of mutual bilateral interest.“You mentioned the matter of inviting the prime minister of Bangladesh. We have invited him for a bilateral visit and, at the same time, to attend the BRICS summit in Delhi. We will share more information with you later,” he said.However, Bangladesh has not yet made any decision on whether Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will attend the BRICS summit, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said on Monday.After Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met the prime minister, Khalilur clarified that the BRICS invitation was extended to the “Chairperson of BIMSTEC”, rather than specifically to the prime minister.“The prime minister was not invited to BRICS; the invitation was extended to the Chairperson of BIMSTEC. Please try to understand this distinction,” he said.The foreign minister also referred to an earlier letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tarique Rahman. He said the letter was handed over on the day the new government was formed and contained an invitation from Modi.“There is one invitation, and we will consider it,” Khalilur said.The differing descriptions of the BRICS invitation come as Dhaka and New Delhi continue discussions on bilateral issues and possible high-level engagements.
