Families of Sitakunda gas leak victims to get Tk 10 lakh each

The owners of a
shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda will provide Tk 10 lakh to each family of
workers killed in a toxic gas leak, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru
Mahmud Chowdhury said today.The government will
also stand by the affected families, he said while visiting the injured and
families of the deceased at Chattogram Medical College Hospital on Friday
afternoon.The minister said the
government has ordered the formation of an investigation committee to determine
the cause of the accident.If anyone is found
responsible after the investigation, the government will take action against
them, he said.The accident occurred
around 9am at Ferdous Steel, a factory in the Station Road area of Bhatiary
Union in Sitakunda.According to
officials, toxic gas leaked from a gas cylinder of a scrapped ship at the
facility, leaving several workers critically ill.The death toll from
the incident has risen to eight.The latest incident
has once again raised concerns over safety standards at shipbreaking yards,
where workers are regularly exposed to hazardous materials and toxic
substances.
