Monir Hossain Patwary, Staff Reporter || Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the BNP not only makes election pledges but also fulfils them, claiming that the party has gone beyond its declared 31-point agenda.“BNP makes promises and keeps them. It announces an election manifesto and implements it. It gives 31 points and fulfils even 32 points—that is BNP,” he said.The home minister made the remarks on Saturday at a programme for distributing retirement and welfare benefits among private school and college teachers and employees at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.Salahuddin said providing retirement benefits to teachers was not included in the party’s original election manifesto, describing it as the “32nd point”.And providing school uniforms is the 33rd point, he added.‘Education must lead to employment’Highlighting initiatives taken during the tenure of former president Ziaur Rahman, the home minister said efforts were made to improve the education system and promote production-oriented education.He said initiatives including technical education were undertaken during Ziaur Rahman’s time with the aim of turning students into productive members of society.Referring to former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s initiative for teachers’ retirement benefits, Salahuddin said teachers would receive substantial financial support in addition to the existing Teacher Welfare Trust facilities.“Each of them will receive Tk 5 lakh to Tk 7 lakh as retirement benefits. For a poor schoolteacher living in a village, this is a significant amount,” he said.He also said the payment process had been digitised so that retired teachers could receive the money directly into their bank accounts from home.They will not have to pay even a single taka in bribes anywhere, the minister said.
