Belayet Hossain, Staff Reporter || The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has filed a case against e-commerce platform Daraz over allegations of drug sales through its platform, naming the company’s managing director and several unidentified individuals as accused.The case was filed with Badda Police Station in Dhaka on Monday, according to officials familiar with the investigation.The development came a day after DNC officials arrested Anisur Rahman, a supplier of products to Daraz, during a raid in the capital.Supplier arrestedDNC officials said they launched the raid after detecting a drug-related product being sold through Daraz.A team of the DNC’s Dhaka Divisional Intelligence Region conducted a raid at a flat in Badda’s Satarkul area on Sunday afternoon and allegedly recovered a large quantity of CBT oil and various materials used in its production.Anisur Rahman, the owner of the facility and a Daraz supplier, was arrested during the operation.According to investigators, Anisur had lived in Japan for several years, where he allegedly learned a method of producing a type of oil using liquid cannabis extract. After returning to Bangladesh, he allegedly became involved in drug production and sales under the cover of manufacturing perfumed soap.First case under amended lawInvestigators said the case is the first of its kind following recent amendments to the Narcotics Control Act that brought drug-related activities conducted through cyberspace and digital devices under the law.Under Section 36(A) of the Narcotics Control Act 2018, as amended, involvement in the illegal purchase, sale, supply, promotion or transaction of narcotics or psychoactive substances through cyberspace or digital devices can carry severe punishment, including the death penalty and a fine of up to Tk 20 lakh.DNC Director General Hasan Maruf said the government was determined to curb the spread of drugs and that online platforms would also come under increased scrutiny.Alongside Daraz, we are continuing surveillance of other suspicious online platforms, he said.DNC Deputy Director Mehedi Hasan said investigators were examining how the alleged drug-related product was listed and sold through the e-commerce platform.The authorities are also investigating the roles of the accused and other individuals who may have been involved in the alleged online drug trade.
