Palash Tushar Pathan, Staff Reporter || The government is working to upgrade 50-bed health complexes in every upazila to 150-bed facilities to expand healthcare services closer to people’s homes, State Minister for Health Dr MA Muhit said on Thursday.He made the remarks while inaugurating a nationwide oral cholera vaccination campaign at Tejgaon in Dhaka.Dr Muhit said the government is prioritising disease prevention over treatment, arguing that preventing illness is more effective in protecting public health than increasing dependence on medical services after people fall sick.He said the highest-ever allocation for the health sector has been made in this year’s national budget as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare services.During the inauguration, the state minister administered an oral cholera vaccine to a person with disabilities and urged people across the country to participate in the campaign.Emphasising the importance of vaccination in preventing cholera and diarrhoeal diseases, he said the oral vaccine is easy to administer and should reach people in every part of the country, including remote villages, chars and isolated hill communities.He called on social organisations and local leaders to work together to turn the vaccination campaign into an effective social movement.Dr Muhit also stressed the importance of safe water, saying vaccination alone cannot prevent waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea.He urged people to ensure the use and proper storage of safe and clean water for drinking, cooking and all household activities.Health Services Division Secretary Md Kamruzzaman Chowdhury chaired the programme.
