Ashikur Rahman Ashik, Staff Reporter || Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has congratulated President-elect Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir with red roses following his victory in Bangladesh’s presidential election.Mirza Fakhrul, the ruling BNP’s candidate, was elected president on Thursday after securing 255 votes in the parliamentary election. His rival, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed Bir Bikram, the candidate backed by an 11-party alliance, received 88 votes.Voting was held at the Jatiya Sangsad from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, after which Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin announced the result.A total of 349 lawmakers were eligible to vote. Three lawmakers were absent from the election: Dhaka-8 MP Mirza Abbas, Chattogram-3 MP Mostafa Kamal Pasha, and independent candidate Rumin Farhana, MP from Brahmanbaria-2.Mirza Fakhrul’s election marks a major development in the country’s political landscape, with the BNP candidate set to take office as Bangladesh’s 23rd president.
