Polash Tushar Pathan, Staff Reporter || Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, elected as Bangladesh’s 23rd president, is set to take oath at Bangabhaban at 7:30pm today (Friday).The Election Commission officially declared Mirza Fakhrul elected on Thursday evening under the Presidential Election Act, 1991 and the Presidential Election Rules, 1991.He secured 255 votes in Thursday’s presidential election, defeating retired Colonel Oli Ahmed, the candidate of the 11-party alliance, who received 88 votes.The results were announced by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin after vote counting ended at around 5:20pm.Mirza Fakhrul’s election marks the first direct vote for the presidency in the Jatiya Sangsad in 35 years.Presidency vacant after Sahabuddin’s resignationFormer president Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on July 24, citing health reasons. Following his resignation, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed assumed the duties of the president in accordance with the Constitution.The presidential election was subsequently held, with Mirza Fakhrul securing the highest number of valid votes.His oath-taking at Bangabhaban today will formally mark the beginning of his tenure as the country’s 23rd president.
