Belayet Hossain, Reporter || Mohammad Selim Uddin, ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka North unit, has said many people are not receiving adequate treatment and diagnostic services at public hospitals, while low-income families often cannot afford costly treatment at private facilities.Speaking at a free medical camp and medicine distribution programme at the National Bangla High School field in Mirpur-2 on Friday morning, he said, “If you have money, everything is available; if you don’t, you don’t get treatment.” He stressed the need to ensure healthcare as a basic right for all.The programme was organised on the initiative of Selim Uddin, the Jamaat-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation.He said Jamaat organises free medical camps at different locations throughout the year to provide treatment to disadvantaged and low-income people.Selim Uddin said that if elected, he would work to improve healthcare services at Dhaka North City Corporation hospitals, ensure necessary equipment and provide treatment at affordable costs. He also pledged to bring the hospitals under essential surgical and other medical services as quickly as possible.“We want to build internationally standard hospitals,” he said, adding that he wanted to bring changes to the healthcare sector so that people would not have to travel abroad for advanced treatment.He also called for effective measures to prevent unnecessary outflow of money and money laundering in the name of medical treatment.Speaking about Dhaka’s urban environment, Selim Uddin pledged to work with party workers, supporters and residents to make the city cleaner and more liveable.Jamaat’s Dhaka North secretary Dr Muhammad Rezaul Karim and assistant secretary Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman attended the event as special guests. Dhaka-14 MP Barrister Mir Ahmed Bin Kasem Arman inaugurated the programme.Dr Rezaul Karim said there was no alternative to Selim Uddin’s leadership for the development and modernisation of Dhaka North.People from different professions and communities in Mirpur and surrounding areas received medical services at the daylong camp.
