Monir Hossain Patwari, Reporter || A banner commemorating those killed and injured in the August 21 grenade attack in 2004 was put up at Jagannath University (JU) campus early Friday.The banner was placed at the university's fourth gate, reportedly by the banned Jagannath University Chhatra League.It features photographs of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and images from the August 21 grenade attack. The words “Horrific August 21” appear prominently on one side of the banner.It also carries the message: “Moving forward by conquering death! O leader, we are your companions in protecting the country and its people.The banner was reportedly installed on the initiative of Mostafiz Hossain Musa, joint general secretary of the Jagannath University Chhatra League.Speaking about the banner, Musa said, “The Jagannath University Chhatra League pays its deepest respects to those affected by the barbaric grenade attack on August 21, which was aimed at killing leader Sheikh Hasina. Jagannath University Chhatra League has always been on the streets and will continue to be so in the days ahead.”Jagannath University Proctor (Acting) Professor Azam Khan said he was unaware of the banner.“However, a banned organisation is trying to create instability on the campus in this way. We will remain alert and take steps to identify those involved and take action against them,” he said.On August 21, 2004, a grenade attack took place at an Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital. Several people, including Awami League leaders and activists, were killed and injured in the attack.Awami League leaders and activists have traditionally observed August 21 through various programmes each year.
