Political Protection Helped Former UP Member Build Power Base in Hatiya

A
former union parishad member allegedly built a powerful network of influence in
Noakhali’s Hatiya, with local residents accusing him of involvement in drug
trafficking, extortion and other criminal activities.Hanif
Member, a former Ward 3 member of Burirchar Union, was reportedly a close aide
of former MP and Hatiya Awami League leader Mohammad Ali. Residents said his
political connections helped him establish control over parts of the island for
years.Local
sources alleged that Hanif’s influence extended beyond Burirchar, including
ferry terminals, fish markets and areas along coastal embankments. He was also
accused of intimidating residents, physically assaulting opponents and filing
what locals described as false cases against those who challenged him.Several
residents further alleged that he was involved in armed efforts to suppress the
student-led anti-discrimination movement during July-August 2024.Locals
said his alleged political backing allowed him to operate with little
opposition and created a climate of fear in parts of Hatiya.Hanif
could not be reached for comment on the allegations. The claims could not be
independently verified.
