Palash Tushar Pathan, Reporter || Bangladesh would positively consider joining the ‘Mecca Pact’ if the member countries propose its inclusion, Foreign Minister Khaleelur Rahman told parliament on Thursday.Responding to an additional question from independent MP Rumin Farhana during the question-answer session, the minister described the pact as an internal matter of the Muslim community and said it was intended as a mechanism for the self-defence of the global Muslim community.He said there was currently no proposal for Bangladesh to join the pact, which was signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan on August 7.The pact was signed among three countries, and we view it positively, Khaleelur Rahman said. If they express their intention to include Bangladesh, we will certainly consider it positively.Rumin Farhana asked what benefits Bangladesh could gain by joining the pact.The foreign minister said it was too early to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of joining, as the matter would first depend on the intentions of the existing signatories.He said Bangladesh would consider all relevant aspects if an invitation is extended.If the pact expands, it will be a mechanism for the self-defence of the global Muslim community, the minister said. This is an internal matter of the Muslim family. Therefore, there is no scope for concern from others over it.The minister made the remarks during Thursday’s parliamentary session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
