Polash Tushar Pathan, Reporter || Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has urged newly enrolled lawyers to prioritise professional skills, integrity and hard work instead of chasing money at the beginning of their careers.Speaking as the chief guest at a reception for University of Asia Pacific (UAP) law graduates who passed the Bangladesh Bar Council enrolment examination, the minister advised young lawyers not to seek quick wealth through corruption or shortcuts.He said the Bar Council enrolment examination is being kept strict and transparent to ensure that only candidates with merit and competence enter the legal profession.Those who have passed the examination and received enrolment certificates have earned their positions through their own merit and qualifications, he said.“There is no scope for nepotism in the enrolment examination,” Asaduzzaman said, adding that even children of members of the enrolment committee have failed the examination in the past.The minister urged young lawyers to remain patient, noting that work and remuneration may be limited at the beginning of their careers. With experience, both the volume of work and professional earnings would increase, he said.He also stressed professional ethics and said lawyers must maintain appropriate professional relationships with their clients while upholding the dignity of the profession.At the same time, lawyers have a responsibility to help poor and vulnerable people access justice, he said, urging them to handle some cases free of charge according to their ability.Asaduzzaman also encouraged young lawyers to study regularly and strengthen their legal drafting and other professional skills. “There is an opportunity to learn every day in the legal profession,” he said.The minister said the government is moving towards introducing training programmes to improve lawyers’ professional skills.He called for building a respected legal community based on education, merit, competence, honesty and ethical values.The event was held at the UAP auditorium in the capital on Friday. UAP Board of Trustees Chairman KM Mujibul Haque, acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mahiuddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, acting Dean of the School of Law Prof Dr MA Baki Khalili, and teachers and students attended the programme. Later, the successful law graduates were honoured.
