International Desk || The death toll from devastating flash floods triggered in Nepal’s Rasuwa region has risen to 489, while more than 2,300 people remain missing, authorities said.Fresh fears of flooding have emerged after a landslide-generated lake on the Tibetan side reportedly overflowed and breached its embankment, raising concerns of another surge of water downstream.Authorities have issued high alerts in several districts and temporarily suspended rescue operations amid the worsening situation.On Friday, residents in Rasuwa district, near the Nepal-China border, began moving to safer areas as water levels in the Bhote Koshi River started rising again.A witness told Reuters that many residents were taking shelter on higher ground amid fears that the river could overflow.Nepal Police said 489 bodies had been recovered by Friday noon from eight districts. The highest number of deaths was reported in Chitwan, where 186 bodies were recovered. Another 112 were found in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), followed by 44 in Gorkha, 40 in Dhading, 37 in Nuwakot, 29 in Tanahun, 28 in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta West) and 13 in Rasuwa.Police said 2,381 people were still missing.Among the missing are 644 foreign nationals, mainly from India, the United States, Ukraine, Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada. The list also includes 127 Nepali expatriates visiting the country and 1,737 local residents.Emergency agencies are continuing efforts to move families living in vulnerable areas to safer locations. However, the threat of renewed flooding has disrupted rescue operations and raised concerns about the safety of both rescuers and residents.Source: Nepal News
