Belayet Hossain, Reporter || The first six months of the current government have demonstrated its failure to meet public expectations, Islami Andolan Bangladesh Amir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim said on Saturday.He made the remarks while addressing the party’s district representatives’ conference at the BMA auditorium in Dhaka.Rezaul Karim said BNP leaders had made several promises before the election, including creating one crore jobs, improving people’s living standards and ensuring public safety.However, six months into the government’s tenure, there are hardly any visible signs of those commitments being implemented, he claimed.“Rather, the situation has become more fragile in many areas,” he said.Unemployment, killings raise concernsThe Islami Andolan chief claimed that around 20,000 workers had become unemployed in the readymade garment sector alone over the past six months.He also claimed that an average of 10 people are being killed every day, while load-shedding has reached an alarming level and fuel shortages have raised questions about the country’s stability.Criticising the law enforcement situation, Rezaul Karim said police often arrest suspects after killings, but justice is not ultimately delivered.“Even when lower courts deliver verdicts, those verdicts are not implemented. Justice loses its way within the judicial process,” he said.He said people had expected law enforcement agencies to act before crimes occur and prevent criminals from carrying out offences.According to him, the government has failed to make the law enforcement agencies effective enough to meet public expectations.Govt urged to address public concernsRezaul Karim urged the government to ensure public safety, reduce load-shedding, resolve the fuel crisis and control the prices of essential commodities.“Otherwise, public anger may reach a critical point,” he warned.Calls for implementation of reformsThe Islami Andolan chief also criticised the government over the reform process.He said his party had repeatedly called for reforms, but the government’s role in this regard has been disappointing.He claimed that national consensus had been reached on the issue of electing the president under the July Charter, but the latest presidential election did not follow that consensus.He further alleged that the government had taken an opposing position on other reform proposals.“We have repeatedly said that authoritarianism was established in the country by exploiting constitutional provisions and weaknesses in constitutional institutions,” he said.Rezaul Karim called for reforms in line with the July Charter to ensure the permanent elimination of authoritarianism.He warned that if the government fails to carry out the necessary reforms, it will have to bear responsibility for any consequences arising from public dissatisfaction.
