International Desk || Nepal police have detained 29 people over allegations of looting cash from a bank safe that was swept away by devastating floods.According to police, the safe was washed away by floodwaters in the Bhotekoshi area of Rasuwa district on September 10. It was later recovered from the banks of the Trishuli River in Belkhukhola area of Galchhi Rural Municipality in Dhading district.Police received information on September 12 that some locals had broken open the safe and taken the cash. Following an investigation, officers detained 29 people and recovered NPR 9.2685 million from them.Most of the detainees are residents of Mastar in Galchhi-4, while others are from Adamghat and Adamtar. Some are originally from Chitwan and Parsa but currently live in Dhading. The detainees are aged between 19 and 49.Police are investigating the source of the recovered money and whether more people were involved.Gold earrings allegedly stolen from flood victimIn another disturbing incident, two people were arrested for allegedly stealing gold earrings from the body of a woman who was swept away by floodwaters in the Narayani River.They were arrested after a video showing two men allegedly removing the earrings from the victim’s body went viral on social media.Flood death toll rises to 626Meanwhile, Nepal’s flood death toll has risen to 626, while 2,426 people remain missing, according to updated figures released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on Saturday.The number of missing people was previously reported at 1,924 on Friday night. The number of missing foreign nationals remains unchanged at 517.Rescue and recovery operations are still underway across the flood-affected areas.
