RAKIBUL ISLAM , Staff Reporter || Bangladesh Police officers across different ranks have expressed growing concern over prolonged promotion delays, disparities with the administration cadre and shortages of logistics and institutional support, according to interviews with serving officers and officials familiar with the matter.Officers from assistant superintendent of police (ASP) to additional inspector general (Addl IGP), as well as field-level inspectors, sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors, said slow career progression and limited opportunities for promotion have affected morale and the chain of command within the force. Many also complained that administration cadre officers receive faster promotions, including through supernumerary posts, while similar measures are rarely applied to police officers.Police Headquarters data show that several senior positions at the additional IGP level remain vacant, including posts related to development, human resources, audit, telecommunications and the Naval Police. Officers argue that filling these posts and introducing supernumerary promotions could ease the backlog.During Police Week in May, members of the force placed several demands before the government, including resolving promotion stagnation, introducing a separate pay structure, increasing allowances, strengthening training capacity, improving logistics and establishing an independent cyber unit. The prime minister also expressed support for honorary promotions before retirement for personnel from constable to inspector ranks.Officers further said inadequate patrol vehicles, shortages of investigators and outdated training facilities continue to affect operational capacity. They also called for expanding manpower, restructuring the organisational framework and creating specialised cyber policing capabilities.Security analysts and academics say sustained reforms, improved training and a transparent promotion system will be essential to restoring morale, strengthening professionalism and improving the overall effectiveness of the police force.
