International Desk || A group of people linked to Hindu nationalist organisations staged a protest outside the Kolkata office of Anandabazar Patrika, objecting to a headline used by the newspaper in a report on clashes at Jadavpur University.The protesters allegedly smeared saffron paint across parts of the newspaper’s white office building and raised slogans including, “Hindustan will not tolerate insult to saffron.”The controversy stems from a report published by Anandabazar Patrika on the August 20 clashes at Jadavpur University, in which the newspaper used the phrase “saffron hooliganism”.Videos widely circulated on social media showed a group of saffron-clad people painting the building’s walls while chanting slogans. Several police personnel were also seen standing nearby.Hours later, the newspaper authorities repainted the affected sections and restored the building to its previous appearance.The Hindu reported that those who smeared paint on the building have not yet been identified, and no written complaint had been filed in connection with the incident at the time of reporting.Clash at Jadavpur UniversityThe incident followed clashes on August 20 between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and left-backed student organisations during a general meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union at Jadavpur University. The violence continued until the early hours of the following day. Both sides blamed each other for the clashes and alleged that outsiders had been brought onto the campus.
