International Desk || The BJP-led West Bengal government has ordered the closure of 252 unrecognised madrasas in the first phase and issued show-cause notices to another 100 institutions, citing infrastructure deficiencies, curriculum irregularities, lack of documents and discrepancies in student records. The decision follows a survey launched on July 22 by the state’s Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education Department across 22 districts, including Kolkata. The survey reportedly found around 2,396 madrasas operating across West Bengal without official recognition.Notices ordering the closure of the 252 institutions have been sent to the respective district administrations. The 100 institutions served with show-cause notices have been warned of further action if they fail to provide satisfactory explanations and the required documents within the stipulated time.West Bengal’s Minority Development Minister said recognised madrasas would not face any disruption in their activities. However, BJP leaders have attached a stronger political message to the move, saying the government would not tolerate the establishment of unrecognised madrasas “anywhere” or any alleged activities that could create trouble.BJP leaders have also cited past incidents in which alleged extremists were arrested while identifying themselves as madrasa teachers. They further alleged that some institutions had been used for anti-national activities, claims that have been cited as part of the justification for the government’s tougher approach. The move has triggered criticism and controversy. While the administration describes the action as a routine measure aimed at improving infrastructure and addressing security concerns, sections of the Muslim community have accused the government of discrimination and of selectively targeting Muslim educational institutions.Critics argue that deficiencies in infrastructure or a lack of formal approval may also exist among other religious and private educational institutions, questioning why unrecognised madrasas are being subjected to such a sweeping action. The decision has already raised concern among Muslims in the state, with observers suggesting that the issue could have wider political and social implications in West Bengal.
