At least five people were killed and six others
injured in an Israeli airstrike on a residential apartment in Gaza City’s
western Rimall area early Saturday, medical workers at Al-Shifa Hospital said.Al Jazeera correspondent Hani Al-Shaer, reporting
from Khan Younis, said the strike hit the Al-Asala building without any prior
warning. The attack took place while residents were asleep,
he said.We could hear the sound of the warplanes getting
louder and louder. Then three strikes were carried out, killing people inside
the apartment, Al-Shaer said. The explosion tore through the targeted apartment
and caused extensive damage to lower floors of the multi-storey building. The fire continued to burn for about an hour
before Palestinian Civil Defence teams managed to put it out. Al-Shaer
described the scene as horrific.Several residents were trapped under the rubble,
he said. Civil Defence workers continued searching the site for missing people
and bodies.Israeli drones were seen flying over the area
during the rescue operation, while the sound of warplanes flying at low
altitude could also be heard across Gaza, according to Al-Shaer.Al-Shifa Hospital said four of the five people
killed were women. Among them were an elderly Christian woman and her daughter. The six injured people were taken to Al-Shifa
Hospital for treatment.
Rimal is one of the most densely populated
residential areas of Gaza City. Thousands of displaced people are sheltering
there in temporary tents and camps.
