Six members of an alleged motorcycle theft gang
have been arrested for stealing motorcycles in the capital by breaking their

alias Russell, 30; Md Amir Faisal alias Rabbi, 30; Faisal, 25; Sourav, 22;
Jahangir Alam Pappu, 29; and Mozammel Haque Masum, 22.According to the DB, the investigation began
after a motorcycle was stolen in front of Baitur Rahman Mosque on Salimullah
Road in Mohammadpur on October 2.The owner had locked his motorcycle and entered
the mosque to offer Asr prayers at around 4:30pm. Taking advantage of his
absence, the suspects allegedly broke the lock with a specially made iron key
and fled with the motorcycle within seconds. The CCTV footage of the theft went viral on
social media, drawing the attention of the DB. Members of the DB Lalbagh
division’s organised crime and vehicle theft prevention team analysed the
footage and used information technology to identify the suspects.Police subsequently arrested Russell during
drives in Nandipara and Madartek areas under Sabujbagh Police Station. They
recovered two specially made keys and a stolen motorcycle from his possession.Acting on information provided by Russell, police
arrested Amir Faisal alias Rabbi in front of Saddam Market under Jatrabari
Police Station and recovered another stolen motorcycle.Further drives in Laksham upazila of Cumilla led
to the recovery of four stolen motorcycles and the arrest of Faisal and Sourav.
Police later recovered three more stolen motorcycles and arrested Pappu and
Masum in Chatkhil upazila of Noakhali. An auto-rickshaw allegedly used in the
thefts was also seized.During preliminary interrogation, Russell and
Rabbi reportedly told investigators that they stole motorcycles from different
parts of the capital using the same technique and supplied them to Faisal and
Sourav in Laksham and Pappu and Masum in Chatkhil.Police records show that Russell has 15 cases
related to motorcycle theft, while Rabbi faces seven theft cases. A general
register (GR) conviction warrant is pending against Russell, and two GR
warrants are pending against Rabbi.Legal proceedings against the arrestees are
underway, the DB said.
