Matin Sagor, Investigative Reporter || Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has said that any attempt to destabilise Bangladesh would ultimately serve the interests of fascist forces, urging all pro-democracy and anti-fascist groups that took part in the July uprising to remain united.Speaking as the chief guest at a reception and discussion marking the July Uprising Day 2026 in Tangail on Wednesday, Tuku said the July movement belonged to all Bangladeshis, not to any individual or political party. The event, held under the theme “Building the Nation in the Spirit of July, Bangladesh First,” was organised by the Tangail district administration at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium.He said unnecessary attempts to create instability would only provide an opportunity for allies of authoritarianism and fascism to exploit divisions. Instead, he called on all democratic forces to safeguard the spirit and achievements of the July uprising through unity.Referring to the anti-fascist movement, Tuku said many people had been victims of enforced disappearance over the past 17 years. He also claimed that members of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal accounted for the highest number of martyrs during the July 2024 uprising.The state minister said the core objective of the July movement was to build a democratic, discrimination-free and inclusive Bangladesh. He stressed that achieving this vision would require collective efforts from all sections of society.Speaking about the government's performance, Tuku said the current administration had assumed office amid a difficult economic situation and had already begun implementing development programmes following the passage of the national budget.Addressing the July fighters, he pledged to support employment initiatives and said he would work to ensure free medical treatment for officially recognised card-holding July fighters in his constituency as a member of parliament from Tangail.The programme was chaired by Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque. Among those present were Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar, Civil Surgeon Dr Farazi Muhammad Mahbubul Alam Monju, Tangail BNP President Hasanuzzamil Shahin, former BNP district Member Secretary Mahmudul Haque (Sanu), DAB district convener Dr M.A. Motin, government officials, political leaders, July fighters and family members of those killed during the uprising.Representatives of July fighters and martyrs' families from all 12 upazilas of Tangail also addressed the event. Earlier in the day, officials and participants paid tribute at the July Memorial Monument as part of the district's observance of July Uprising Day.
