Rakibul Islam, Investigative Reporter || Bangladesh Police has urged people to remain cautious about false, misleading and intentional misinformation being spread on social media platforms targeting senior police officials and other important figures of the state.In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Headquarters said a group has recently been conducting “false, fabricated, misleading, provocative and motivated propaganda” on platforms including Facebook against senior officials of Bangladesh Police and key government figures.The police strongly condemned such campaigns, saying they were aimed at creating confusion among the public, destabilising the law and order situation, weakening the morale of the police force and damaging the image of the government.The statement said it was suspected that defeated fascist forces and their local and foreign allies were behind such activities.Police Headquarters also said that Bangladesh Police is currently taking legal action against activities of banned political organisations. It added that a section of people, who were unhappy over the rejection of undue recommendations, were spreading fabricated information as part of a smear campaign.According to the statement, authorities have evidence of involvement of some individuals in various offences, including unethical lobbying at government offices and attempts to demand money by threatening to stop spreading propaganda.The police requested citizens not to believe, share or circulate such misleading and provocative content. It also called upon everyone to play a responsible role in preventing rumours and misinformation.Police Headquarters warned that legal action would be taken against those involved if such propaganda continues.The statement added that Bangladesh Police remains committed to maintaining public safety, restoring normal law and order and building trust with citizens through professional service.
