International Desk || At least 202 migrants have been rescued off the coast of Crete in southern Greece in less than 48 hours, with most of them identified as nationals of Bangladesh and Sudan.The latest rescue took place on Thursday when the Greek Coast Guard rescued 40 migrants off the coast of Ierapetra. Earlier, 112 migrants had arrived on two boats, including 72 Bangladeshis, 31 Sudanese and nine Egyptian nationals.All those rescued were taken to a temporary accommodation facility at the port of Heraklion, according to reports.Meanwhile, Greek authorities arrested a 16-year-old South Sudanese boy on suspicion of involvement in migrant smuggling. He is accused of facilitating the journey of around 50 migrants from Libya’s Tobruk to Greece.Authorities reportedly suspect that each migrant paid between $1,500 and $2,000 to make the journey from Libya to Greece.The latest rescues highlight the continued movement of migrants across the Mediterranean route from North Africa toward Greece.Source: Middle East Monitor
