Two additional trains will be added to Dhaka’s metro rail service by the end of this month to ease overcrowding during the night and improve passenger convenience.

The move will reduce the gap between the final two trains from around 20 minutes to just 7–8 minutes, according to the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).

At present, the last train from Motijheel towards Uttara leaves at 10:30pm, while the final train from Uttara towards Motijheel departs at 9:50pm.

DMTCL said on Wednesday that it is also planning to extend metro rail operating hours by another 20–30 minutes from September, allowing services to continue until 11pm.

The recruitment and training of new train operators for the extended service are nearly complete.

Passenger numbers rise after extended service

The metro rail service was previously extended by 20 minutes in both directions from June 7. Since then, daily ridership has increased by around 10,000.

At present, around 450,000 passengers use the metro rail every day.

However, the 20-minute gap between the final trains has been creating additional congestion, particularly during the night.

To address the situation, DMTCL has taken the initiative to introduce two more trains by the end of this month. Officials expect the interval between trains to fall to 7–8 minutes after the additional services are introduced.

Operating hours may extend to 11pm

DMTCL sources said new operators have already been recruited to facilitate the planned extension of operating hours.

Their training is expected to be completed by August 26, after which they will be assigned to operational duties.

The planned extension would allow metro rail services to continue until 11pm from September, providing passengers with greater flexibility and helping reduce pressure on the final trains of the day.
