He laid a wreath at the
memorial shortly after 10:15am and stood in silence for a while to honour those
who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War.
A smartly turned-out
contingent of the Army, Navy and Air Force accorded the newly elected president
a guard of honour. The bugle also played a solemn tune during the tribute.
After paying his respects,
President Mirza Fakhrul signed the visitors’ book kept on the memorial
premises. He later planted a sapling there.
On Friday night, Mirza
Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, former secretary general of the BNP, took oath as the
country’s 23rd president at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
Acting Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal
administered the oath of office to him.
