US President Donald Trump has rejected a seven-day ceasefire and peace proposal put forward by Iran, according to The Wall Street Journal, as concerns grow that Washington could resume bombing Tehran after the US midterm elections.NDTV reported the development on Saturday.Iran had proposed opening the strategic Strait of Hormuz and halting the conflict within seven days if Washington agreed to its conditions. The proposal came after the United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran in late February, escalating tensions in the region.Speaking to reporters at the United Nations on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had sent a detailed seven-day plan to Washington through Qatar. He said Iran was ready to move forward if the United States demonstrated sincerity about reaching an agreement and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.The decision is now in the hands of the United States, Araghchi said, adding that Iran would not accept pressure, threats or intimidation and would not surrender its sovereign rights under pressure.Under Iran’s proposal, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened within seven days if the United States lifted its naval blockade, removed oil sanctions and accepted a ceasefire across the region, including Lebanon. Tehran would also return to negotiations over its nuclear programme, according to the report.The proposal was described as similar to an agreement signed in June. On June 17, Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a 14-point agreement aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East. It called for an immediate halt to all military operations, including in Lebanon, and a final agreement within 60 days.Trump announced the cancellation of that agreement on July 8. A week later, Tehran suspended the memorandum of understanding, accusing Washington of violating its commitments.The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, later reported that Trump had rejected Iran’s latest proposal. The US president was also said to have expressed doubts over whether Tehran would fulfil its conditions and was moving towards a possible resumption of bombing. The White House, however, said on Friday that US officials were continuing positive and constructive discussions with mediators.
