The Islami Chhatra Shibir unit of Islamic University (IU) staged a protest rally on Sunday, alleging irregularities and politicisation in the recruitment of assistant primary school teachers.The procession began around 7:30pm from the university’s Zia Mor and paraded through several key roads before ending in front of the main gate, where the protesters held a brief rally. More than a hundred leaders and activists, including IU Shibir Secretary Rashedul Islam Rafi, took part.At the rally, speakers alleged that the current recruitment process was showing signs of the kind of political influence they said had been used during the previous government to exclude meritorious candidates. They called for recruitment to be based solely on merit and qualifications.Rafi alleged that meritorious candidates were being harassed in the name of police verification and that attempts were being made to create discrimination by manipulating marks in NTRCA examinations and viva voce tests. The 2024 mass uprising was, among other things, a call for merit-based evaluation, he said, demanding that all qualified candidates who passed the recruitment process be appointed on merit without harassment.
