Germany were held to a goalless draw by Greece in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday, extending Jurgen Klopp’s wait for his first win since taking charge. After four matches, Germany have five points and sit third in Group A2.
Germany
dominated possession and created more attacking opportunities, but failed to
convert them. Greece came close early on when Giorgos Masouras found himself in
a promising position in the second minute, only for Germany goalkeeper Jonas
Urbig to make an excellent save.
Germany
gradually took control of the game and threatened the Greek defence through
Florian Wirtz and others. They thought they had taken the lead in the 34th
minute when Jonathan Burkardt found the net, but the goal was ruled out
following a VAR review because of a foul in the build-up.
Klopp’s
side continued to push after the break but could not break through Greece’s
organised defence. The hosts also created a few chances on the counter, but
Urbig remained alert to keep Germany from conceding.
Germany
now have five points from four matches, behind the Netherlands and Greece, who
both have eight. Serbia are bottom of the group without a win.
With
two matches remaining, Germany will need to improve their attacking efficiency
to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Their upcoming games against Serbia
and the Netherlands will be crucial.
