Bangladeshi singer Asif Akbar has released a new version of his song ‘Tragedy Pilkhana’, more than 17 years after its original release. This time, he is joined by Rodosi, the champion in the modern song category of the 2025 edition of Notun Kuri.
The
original song featured Asif Akbar alongside Poroshi, then known for her success
in the children’s singing competition Khude Gaanraj. Poroshi was in
Class Eight at the time. In a striking coincidence, Rodosi is also currently
studying in Class Eight.
The newly arranged version is scheduled for release on October 9, Rodosi’s birthday, on Asif Akbar’s official YouTube channel. Written by Rajib Ahmed, the song was composed by renowned tabla player, composer and music director Pallab Sanyal. Rajib Hossain has created the new musical arrangement, while Yamin Ilan directed the music video.
Why Rodosi was chosen
Explaining the decision to remake the song and bring Rodosi on board, Asif Akbar described it as a milestone in his musical career. The 2009 Pilkhana tragedy claimed the lives of 57 officers. We made the song to pay tribute to the officers who lost their lives and express our deepest condolences to their families, he said.
Asif recalled that the original version required a child’s voice, which led them to choose Poroshi. After nearly 17 years, he felt the song deserved a new arrangement. He said he contacted Ethun Babu, through whom he learned about Rodosi. After listening to her sing, Asif was impressed by her performance. Rodosi has sung beautifully. I believe she will go a long way, he said.
Rodosi
Noor Siddiqui said she felt fortunate to be part of the project.
Rather
than just feeling happy, I feel incredibly lucky. I am grateful to Ethun Babu
sir for recommending my name and to Asif Akbar sir for including me in this
song. It is truly a great achievement for me, she said.
Composer sees promise in Rodosi
Composer Pallab Sanyal, who teaches Rodosi, praised her voice and potential. She sings very well, and her voice holds great promise. A voice like hers is not commonly found, he said.
Sanyal added that with proper training and practice, Rodosi could develop into a refined singer like Shakila Zafar. Rodosi has recently completed the junior course at Shishu Academy and is also learning music at Chhayanaut. She is currently a Class Eight student at Holy Cross Girls’ High School.
Her father, Dr Mohammad Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui, and mother, Dr Regina Ahmed, are both involved in teaching at the University of Dhaka. The new version of ‘Tragedy Pilkhana’ brings a familiar song back into the spotlight with a new generation of young talent, while renewing its tribute to the officers who lost their lives in the 2009 tragedy.
