Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has strongly criticised the detention of opposition leaders in India’s capital, describing the situation as an “undeclared Emergency”. He warned that he would launch an indefinite hunger strike or begin a foot march if the detained leaders were not released by Sunday.

In a post on social media platform X on Saturday, Wangchuk demanded the immediate release of the detained leaders. His remarks came after opposition leaders were detained in Delhi during protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police detained at least 1,000 people overnight on Friday ahead of protest programmes organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and the All India Students’ Association. Around 4,000 people had been detained during Saturday’s demonstrations, according to the latest reports.

Police said the detentions were preventive measures targeting individuals with a history of involvement in protests.

As of 12:30am on Sunday, around 250 of those detained were from southeast Delhi, particularly the Shaheen Bagh area. More than 100 others were detained from Shahdara and eastern Delhi.

More than 30,000 security personnel have been deployed across the capital in response to the protests. Surveillance has been stepped up in areas bordering Delhi, while 13 temporary detention facilities have been designated to hold those taken into custody.

The detentions have intensified criticism of the authorities’ handling of the protests and raised fresh concerns over the right to peaceful assembly and political dissent in India.
