There is no alternative to implementing a
zero-tolerance policy in this regard, he said at an event marking
International and National Girl Child Day at the Bangladesh Shishu Academy
auditorium on Monday at around 11:00am.
The president stressed the need to ensure the
safety and protection of girls in all settings, including schools and social
media.
He said the government was emphasising poverty
alleviation, free education, stipends and stronger social protection measures
to prevent child marriage. Verifying birth registrations and expanding
opportunities for girls to pursue higher education were also important, he
added.
Referring to the killing of schoolgirl Tajmin in
Cumilla, the president said the country was making progress in some areas but
falling behind in others.
Parents have a responsibility to keep an eye on
their children, he said, adding that the girl had been away from home for
three days without any apparent concern among her guardians.
Expressing concern over public safety, he said, When mothers sit on sheets of paper beside schools, waiting to take their children home, it shows how unsafe society has become.
