A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered former law minister Anisul Huq and former state minister for information and communication technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak to be shown arrested in an attempted murder case over the loss of a bus driver's left eye during the July Uprising in 2024.

The case was filed over injuries sustained by Mamun, 25, in Jatrabari of the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order, confirmed state counsel Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon.

Earlier, on September 30, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Awlad Hossain of Jatrabari Police Station, filed a petition seeking to show the two accused arrested in the case.

According to the petition, Anisul and Palak are currently in jail after being shown arrested in another murder case. It alleged that they had played active roles in support of the Awami League government during its crackdown on the anti-discrimination student movement in 2024.

The petition also stated that investigators had found preliminary evidence suggesting their involvement in the case and that showing them arrested was necessary for a fair and impartial investigation.

At the hearing, defence lawyers, including Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, opposed the petition. State counsel Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favour of it. After hearing both sides, the court passed the order.

How the bus driver lost his eye

According to the case statement, Mamun's friends Hossain, Khokon and Arif, along with others, joined the anti-discrimination student movement in Jatrabari from 9:00am on July 18, 2024.

Around 3:00pm that day, protesters were positioned on the flyover in front of Jatrabari Police Station when gunfire was allegedly directed at them.

Mamun sustained bullet injuries to different parts of his body, including his left eye and head, the complaint said.

He was initially taken to Kajla Islamia Hospital in Jatrabari for treatment. After receiving primary care, he was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

After three days of treatment, his left eye deteriorated, and he was transferred to the National Institute of Ophthalmology. His left eye was eventually rendered completely non-functional during treatment, according to the case statement.

Earlier arrests of Anisul and Palak

Police arrested Anisul Huq from the Sadarghat area of Dhaka on August 13, 2024. He was subsequently shown arrested in a murder case filed with New Market Police Station. He has remained in custody in connection with various cases since then.

Palak was arrested on August 15, 2024, from the Nikunja residential area under Khilkhet Police Station, where he was allegedly in hiding. Police showed him arrested in a case filed with Paltan Police Station. He has also remained in custody since then.

The latest court order relates to the attempted murder case over the injuries that left the bus driver blind in his left eye.
