Bangladesh is facing a worsening gas crisis as lower supplies have pushed pressure in the national grid to its lowest level, disrupting industrial production and causing severe hardship for households.Gas shortages have also been compounded by widespread load-shedding. Some rural areas are experiencing up to 15–16 hours of power cuts, while the Rural Electrification Board has sought security for power offices and substations amid public anger.Two floating LNG terminals in Maheshkhali are currently supplying far less gas than their combined capacity. The Excelerate-operated terminal is supplying around 28 crore cubic feet a day instead of 60 crore, while Summit’s supply has fallen to about 25 crore from 50 crore cubic feet.Industries in Gazipur and Narsingdi have been particularly hard hit. Some factories have reportedly been operating at less than 10 percent of capacity, while others have reduced shifts or temporarily suspended production.The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association said around 70 percent of its member factories have reported gas and power shortages.CNG users are also struggling. Several filling stations in Dhaka were found closed due to low pressure, while drivers at operating stations waited for hours to get limited supplies.State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit apologised to the public, saying rough weather at sea has disrupted LNG operations. He said the government was taking all possible measures to restore normal gas and power supplies.
