Dhaka, August 4: Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir on Tuesday condemned what it described as an attack by activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on its July uprising-themed photo exhibition at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur.In a joint statement, Shibir President Nurul Islam and Secretary General Sibgatullah alleged that Chhatra Dal activists carried out a planned attack on the exhibition titled "July Against Oppression", vandalising the display and assaulting Shibir members during the programme.According to the statement, several Shibir activists, including former central library secretary and former university unit president Sohel Rana, were injured in the incident.The organisation also referred to an earlier incident on August 2 at Dhaka University's Shahidullah Hall, alleging that Shibir and hall parliament leaders were attacked during a meeting in the provost's office. It claimed the incidents reflected a pattern of violence against students holding differing political views.The statement further accused Chhatra Dal of attempting to establish dominance on university campuses through intimidation and violence, alleging that the student organisation had failed to move away from confrontational politics.Shibir demanded a fair, impartial and credible investigation into the Rangpur incident and called on the authorities to identify those responsible and ensure exemplary punishment.The organisation also urged the university administration to take effective measures to guarantee the safety of students and maintain a peaceful academic environment on campus.
