Husband sentenced to death for killing wife with electric shock

A court in Cumilla has sentenced Mohammad Azad to death for killing his wife, Tania Begum, by giving her an electric shock following a family dispute.Additional District and Sessions Judge-5 of Cumilla, Mohammad Sultan Uddin Pradhan, pronounced the verdict at around 11:30am on Tuesday.Azad was present in court when the verdict was delivered. He is the son of Md Kabir Hossain of Basantapur village in Munshirhat Union of Chauddagram upazila.Wife killed after family disputeAccording to the case documents and court sources, Azad and his wife Tania had been involved in disputes over various family matters for a long time.On the night of July 27, 2023, Azad allegedly wrapped electrical wires around Tania’s hands and legs and gave her electric shocks. She died at the scene.Following the incident, Tania’s mother, Maya Begum, filed a murder case with Chauddagram Police Station, naming Azad as the prime accused.Police later investigated the case and submitted a charge sheet after examining the post-mortem report, physical evidence and witness statements.After a lengthy trial, including witness testimonies and examination of other documents, the court found Azad guilty and sentenced him to death.Family welcomes verdictDefence and prosecution proceedings concluded before the verdict, and the victim’s family expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision.Lawyer Md Enamul Haque Sarker, representing the plaintiff, said they had finally received justice after a long wait. He also demanded that the sentence be executed without delay.Relatives of the victim were seen expressing satisfaction on the court premises following the verdict.
