Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman Partha has said the government will not interfere in media freedom or journalists’ professional duties.He said the media has played a significant role in Bangladesh’s democratic journey and that the government is committed to ensuring an environment for an independent and responsible press.The minister made the remarks on Thursday at an event marking the 31st founding anniversary of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital. Information and Broadcasting State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury was also present.Today, we are where we are because the media exists. The media’s role has contributed to all the achievements we have made. The media deserves equal credit for the state of democracy in Bangladesh today, Partha said. Inshallah, you will have a free media during our tenure. We have no intention of interfering in the media or in your journalism in any way, he added.At the event, State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury said the government has taken an initiative to increase the allocation for the Journalist Welfare Trust from Tk 6 crore to Tk 25 crore. He said a proposal in this regard has already been sent and discussions have been held with the Finance Ministry. DRU leaders, representatives of journalist organisations and journalists from different media outlets attended the programme.
