Health Minister Visits Family of Woman Who Died After C-Section Complications

Health Minister Sakhawat Hossain visited the family of Kanika Mondal, who died after an alleged medical negligence during a C-section, at Baghutia village in Baliakandi, Rajbari, on Friday morning.Kanika, 35, wife of Ashanta Mondal, died at Ibn Sina Hospital in Kallyanpur, Dhaka, around 2:15am on Thursday while undergoing treatment.The family alleged that gauze was left inside her abdomen after a C-section at Samarita Hospital in Faridpur. She underwent another surgery at Ibn Sina Hospital after the gauze was detected.According to Kanika’s brother-in-law Samir Mondal, she was admitted to Samarita Hospital on June 29 for a C-section. She gave birth to a baby girl that evening under physician Lakshmi Rani Dutta.Her abdomen reportedly became abnormally swollen from the following day. She was later admitted to Ibn Sina Hospital in Kallyanpur on July 3.The family said doctors detected gauze inside her abdomen after several tests on July 7. She underwent surgery the same day to remove it.Kanika remained under treatment at Ibn Sina Hospital until her death.The incident came to the health minister’s attention after reports were published in several media outlets on Thursday. On his instructions, a five-member committee was formed to investigate the incident.During Friday’s visit, Minister Sakhawat Hossain expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of government support. He also handed over Tk 50,000 from his personal fund to the family.Rajbari Deputy Commissioner Afroza Parveen, Civil Surgeon SM Masud, Faridpur Civil Surgeon Mahmudul Hasan, Baliakandi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Chowdhury Mustafizur Rahman and Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Faruk Hossain were present, along with political leaders and local residents.
