Leader of the Opposition in parliament and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has alleged that efforts are being made to erase the memory of the July uprising, warning that such attempts would be resisted with public support."If there is any move to make people forget July, it will be crushed with the people of this country. We have only one life, and let that life be dedicated to the nation," he said.He made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing the unveiling ceremony of the book July Revolution 2024 in the Context of the Struggle for Freedom, organised by One Initiative Research and Development (OIRD) at the CIRDAP International Conference Centre in Dhaka.Shafiqur said various "temptations and offers" had been made to divert attention from the July issue, but insisted that his party would stand by the public mandate. "We have no mandate of our own. The people's verdict must be respected, and we will not betray the nation," he said.Calling for the preservation of an accurate historical record of the 2024 movement, he urged the government to document the contributions of all those involved in the uprising. Referring to the 1971 Liberation War, he said Bangladesh still lacks a complete list of martyrs despite the passage of more than five decades.He also alleged that the narrative surrounding the July movement had changed after the change in government, particularly after February 12 this year, claiming that some political leaders had departed from their earlier commitments.The Jamaat chief further said the government must implement the outcome of the referendum related to the July Charter and expressed concern over what he described as a slowdown in the judicial process over killings, enforced disappearances and alleged repression.Shafiqur also called on the government not to take action against those he described as "July fighters", saying they should not face violence or repression.The programme was chaired by OIRD adviser and Buet professor Dr Md Fakhrul Islam. Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, Dhaka South Jamaat Ameer Md Nurul Islam Bulbul, former DUCSU vice-president Sadiq Kayem and retired Major Akhtaruzzaman, among others, also addressed the event.
