Land Grabbing, Drug Trade Allegations Surface Against BNP Leader in Kaliganj

Allegations of land grabbing, extortion, control over drug trading, arranging gambling sessions and illegally dumping sand on agricultural land have been raised against Khalekuzzaman Bablu, member secretary of the Kaliganj upazila unit of BNP, and his two brothers, Anisur Rahman Ripon and Sohel.Several alleged victims and local residents claim that the three have built an influential network in Kaliganj by using political connections. They also alleged that people who speak out against them are threatened with attacks and harassment through false or retaliatory cases. The allegations were raised at a human chain held in front of the National Press Club on August 29. The victims and their families demanded their security and an impartial investigation into the allegations. One of the major allegations raised at the programme involved the alleged forcible occupation of around four bighas of land belonging to Dubai expatriate Alamgir Kabir. The protesters also alleged that Bayezid Hasan Shibli, a young man who had protested against drug trading, was assaulted and later implicated in a drug case.According to the alleged victims, Bablu has formed an influential group with several individuals, including Ziaurul, Mintu Molla, Sajal Sheikh, Mahfuz and Latif Molla. They claimed that the group intimidates ordinary people and uses various means to extract benefits.Questions over wealth and luxury vehicleLocal residents have also raised questions about Bablu's assets, alleging that he accumulated substantial wealth within a relatively short period. They pointed to his luxury Prado vehicle and a large, lavish residence, and questioned the sources of the money used to acquire the assets.Discussion about alleged links to the drug trade intensified locally after his nephew, Mintu, was arrested with 3,000 yaba tablets. However, the complainants did not present any clear evidence establishing Bablu's involvement in his nephew's arrest or the alleged drug trade.Recently, Bablu's Prado vehicle was attacked in the Pagla Bridge area of Sreepur. Some locals speculated that the incident could be linked to disputes over drug trading or other illegal activities. However, no conclusive information was available to establish the actual motive behind the attack.Allegations over political affiliationsThere are also allegations concerning Bablu's political activities.Several local BNP leaders and activists claimed that although he remains active in BNP programmes, he maintains contacts with beneficiaries and activists of the Awami League. They alleged that this has created dissatisfaction within the local BNP leadership. These allegations, however, could not be independently verified.Local BNP denies allegationsFollowing the allegations raised at the human chain, the Kaliganj upazila BNP issued a counterstatement on August 29.The statement described the allegations made at the programme as fabricated, staged and motivated. The complainants, however, alleged that attempts were being made to suppress their grievances by using political positions and influence.Local BNP leaders, on the other hand, said the allegations could have been politically motivated.Victims call for impartial investigationThe alleged victims and local residents have demanded an impartial investigation into Bablu and his two brothers over the allegations concerning their sources of wealth, land grabbing, drug trading, extortion and other alleged activities. They said that if the allegations are found to be true, legal action should be taken against those responsible irrespective of their political identity. At the same time, they said an impartial investigation was necessary to establish the truth if the allegations were unfounded.Concerned residents of Kaliganj have also questioned what steps the administration and local political leadership will take to prevent anyone from using political influence to intimidate or harass ordinary citizens.
