An Iranian parliament member has sharply criticised the newly signed defence pact between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey, arguing that the agreement will not provide Riyadh with genuine security.Ibrahim Rezaei, a member of Iran’s Parliament and its National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, made the remarks in a post on X. He described the agreement as a “paper pact” and said Saudi Arabia would not gain real security through the deal.Rezaei said Saudi Arabia had failed to secure its safety despite relying heavily on the United States for years. He argued that the new agreement with Turkey and Pakistan would similarly fail to guarantee the kingdom’s security. He also said that if Saudi Arabia changed its policies, it would not need to “ask other countries” for security. The comments came after Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey signed the Mecca Joint Defence Pact on Thursday amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict, growing security concerns in the Gulf region and disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.The agreement was signed in the holy city of Mecca in the presence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.According to a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, an armed attack against any one of the three countries would be considered an attack against all three. The statement said the pact aims to strengthen joint deterrence against aggression and expand defence cooperation across multiple areas. It also highlighted the countries’ historical ties, bonds of brotherhood, Islamic solidarity and shared strategic interests.Saudi Arabia has sought to expand its defence partnerships in recent years amid tensions involving Iran. Key Saudi infrastructure and oil facilities have previously been targeted by drone and missile attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Iraq-based militias.Against this backdrop, the new defence agreement is being viewed as a significant move toward strengthening regional security cooperation.
