Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and International Organization for Migration (IOM) Deputy Director General Ugochi Daniels held a meeting to discuss strengthening cooperation on preventing human trafficking, ensuring safe migration, improving border security and expanding existing partnerships.The courtesy meeting was held on Tuesday night at the UN House in Gulshan, Dhaka, where both sides reviewed the progress of ongoing collaboration between the Ministry of Home Affairs and IOM and discussed future areas of cooperation.During the meeting, Salahuddin Ahmed said Bangladesh remains committed to ensuring safe, orderly and dignified migration. He noted that IOM has been a trusted development partner of the Ministry of Home Affairs for more than two decades and expressed hope that the partnership would become stronger in the future.The home minister highlighted various government initiatives on combating human trafficking, migration management, protecting migrants and strengthening border security. He described human trafficking as a heinous crime and said many people become victims due to misinformation, poverty and lack of awareness.He said the government is working to implement coordinated border management systems to prevent trafficking networks and protect vulnerable communities.When the home minister asked whether IOM had information on human trafficking networks, Ugochi Daniels said the organisation could support efforts to identify trafficking groups. She added that IOM and Interpol have information on trafficking trends, which can be shared with relevant authorities when necessary.Daniels praised IOM’s long-standing partnership with Bangladesh and said the organisation remains ready to provide support in ensuring safe migration. She also stressed the importance of coordinated information management to prevent human trafficking.The IOM deputy director general is visiting Bangladesh on a five-day official trip. Newly appointed IOM Mission Chief in Bangladesh Dr Laura Tom Bondes and senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and IOM were present at the meeting.
