Parts of three luxury vehicles, including a Lexus LX 600, Lexus SC 430 and BMW M5, were found disassembled inside a container imported from Japan under the declaration of used spare parts, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).The container also contained a Honda B18C Type R engine, a front half/half-cut, tyres and a large quantity of other automobile parts, the NBR said in a press release on Tuesday.Acting on a tip-off, officials of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate conducted an operation and identified the consignment. After opening the container, officials found various parts of the three luxury vehicles that had been declared as used spare parts.According to preliminary information, no bill of entry had been submitted for nearly a month after the consignment arrived at the port. An attempt was later made to clear the consignment through an auction process, which was foiled by customs intelligence officials. The NBR said officials are examining whether the recovered vehicle parts possess the essential character of complete vehicles. The Honda B18C Type R engine, front half/half-cut and other spare parts are also being examined. The combined estimated market value of the consignment could be between Tk 9.5 crore and Tk 12 crore, according to preliminary estimates.Authorities are also examining the import value of the consignment, payment records, relevant commercial documents and the nature of the transactions.Officials are investigating whether the consignment has any links to possible money laundering. The authorities are also investigating who was involved in the attempt to import the luxury vehicles by declaring them as spare parts and subsequently clear them through the auction process.
