A police officer was seriously injured after suspected muggers allegedly attacked police with sharp weapons during an anti-mugging operation in Tongi, Gazipur, on Tuesday night.Sub-Inspector Hanif Mahmud, 46, of Tongi West Police Station sustained multiple injuries to his leg while trying to arrest two alleged muggers. Despite being seriously wounded, he managed to hold on to one of the suspects until his colleagues arrived and detained both men.The incident took place around 9:00pm in the Khartail area under Tongi West Police Station.Police said a team led by SI Hanif was conducting an anti-mugging operation in the area when they attempted to catch Kamruzzaman Shawon Khandaker, 26, also known as "Kaillya Shawon", and his associate Sagar, 25, allegedly red-handed.The suspects reportedly launched a sudden attack on the police. At one point, Shawon allegedly used a sharp weapon to repeatedly strike Hanif on the leg before attempting to flee.Despite his injuries, Hanif managed to grab Shawon and hold him until other members of the police team intervened. Both Shawon and Sagar were subsequently taken to the police station.With the help of local residents, the injured officer was immediately rescued and taken to a private hospital. After providing initial treatment, doctors advised that he be transferred to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Dhaka for better treatment.Tongi West Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Arifur Rahman said Hanif had been sent to the institute for treatment.Legal proceedings against the two detained suspects are underway, the OC said.
