The cross-examination of actress Pori Moni in a case filed over alleged rape attempt, attempted murder and assault at a boat club in Savar’s Birulia was postponed again on Sunday as she could not reach court on time due to severe traffic congestion.Judge Shahadat Hossain of the Dhaka 9th Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal set November 30 as the new date for her cross-examination after a hearing on Sunday (August 9).At the start of the hearing, Pori Moni’s lawyer Nilanjana Rifat Surabhi told the court that her client was on her way and could reach the court around noon. The judge subsequently rescheduled the cross-examination for 12pm.However, Pori Moni failed to appear despite being called twice after noon. By then, hearings in other cases had ended and the other accused had left the court. She arrived at the court premises shortly after the scheduled court time had passed.Her lawyer said Pori Moni was stuck in “severe traffic congestion”, preventing her from appearing at the scheduled time. As a result, the cross-examination could not be completed.The three accused in the case are businessman Nasir Uddin, Tuhin Siddiqui Omi and Shahidul Alam. All three are currently out on bail. Shahidul was absent from court and sought additional time, which the court granted. Nasir and Omi were present.How the case beganPori Moni alleged that she was harassed at the Boat Club in Savar’s Birulia on June 8, 2021. She later accused several individuals of physical assault, rape attempt and attempted murder in a social media post and at a press conference at her residence.She subsequently filed a case with Savar Model Police Station. Detective Branch police arrested Nasir Uddin and Omi from Uttara.After completing its investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against the three accused on September 6, 2021.The trial began on May 18, 2022, while Pori Moni’s testimony started on November 29 of the same year. Proceedings in the case are being held in camera.
