DHAKA, Aug 5: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday inaugurated the July Uprising Memorial Museum in the capital, saying the institution would expose "the true face of fascism" and stand as a landmark in Bangladesh's democratic history.Speaking at the inauguration ceremony around 11:00am, the prime minister said the museum would preserve the memory of the July uprising and inspire future generations."The July Memorial Museum will expose the true face of fascism. Today will remain a milestone in Bangladesh's democratic history and mark the beginning of a new journey toward building a new nation," he said.Rahman also said that the people of Bangladesh had endured enforced disappearances and killings during what he described as one and a half decades of authoritarian rule. He added that Bangladesh would "never again become a subservient state."Earlier in the morning, at around 9:00am, the prime minister formally inaugurated the museum. Following the ceremony, he toured its galleries, viewing preserved artefacts, photographs, documents and memorabilia related to the July uprising.The programme included reflections by July uprising survivors and family members of those who were killed during the movement. A documentary on the uprising and its aftermath was also screened, followed by a cultural performance.Culture Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury said the museum would remain reserved for invited guests and families of the victims on its inauguration day. It will be opened to the general public from August 6.Visitors will be able to purchase tickets online. Entry fees have been set at Tk 50 for adults and Tk 25 for children.The museum has been established at the former Ganabhaban premises, where memorabilia and historical materials related to the July uprising have been preserved.According to the background presented at the event, then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh for India on August 5, 2024, amid a student-led mass uprising. Three days later, an interim government led by Prof Muhammad Yunus assumed office and later initiated the establishment of the memorial museum at Ganabhaban.
