Bangladesh declares November 7 a holiday for National Revolution and Solidarity Day

The government has declared November 7 a public holiday to observe National Revolution and Solidarity Day, according to a new circular issued by the Cabinet Division on Sunday (October 11).The circular, which outlines guidelines for the observance of national and international days, also cancels a previous circular issued by the Cabinet Division on March 11.Under the new guidelines, elaborate decorations and large-scale cultural programmes should generally be avoided when observing days other than major national festivals.Discussions may be broadcast on radio and television, while seminars and symposiums may be organised on a limited scale. Rallies and processions should be avoided on working days, the circular said.Programmes marking a particular week should generally be limited to three days. Authorities must also ensure that official observances do not disrupt regular office activities. Discussions and cultural programmes should preferably be held on holidays or after office hours.Events that do not require expenditure on cash or materials may be organised on holidays or working days. Bringing officials and employees to Dhaka from outside the capital or from district-level offices for the observance of a day or week should also be avoided as far as possible.Emphasising continued efforts to reduce government expenditure, the circular directs ministries and divisions to observe similar national and international days together on the same date, giving priority to the relevant international observance.Where applicable, ministries and divisions will send summaries of the proposed arrangements to the Cabinet Division for presentation at cabinet meetings. The Cabinet Division has requested all relevant ministries, divisions and agencies to ensure proper implementation of the decisions.
