Rubaiyat Hossain’s The Difficult Bride has won the Premio Bisato d’Oro, an Independent Film Critics Award, at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The award was presented to director Rubaiyat by the head of the Independent Critics section at around 11pm Bangladesh time on Friday.Speaking to the media after receiving the award, Rubaiyat said the recognition was a great honour for her and an important achievement for Bangladeshi cinema. It is a great honour for me. The award was selected from among all the films screened at a festival like Venice. I am grateful to the jury for appreciating my film, she said. Rubaiyat added that she believes the recognition is significant for the country’s film industry and could contribute to taking Bangladeshi cinema forward.The Difficult Bride made history as the first Bangladeshi feature film to be selected in an official section of the Venice International Film Festival, competing in the Orizzonti section. The film had its world premiere in Venice on September 6 and has since received praise from international media.The 83rd edition of the Venice International Film Festival began on September 2 at the Venice Lido and concludes today, September 12. The official section awards will also be announced today, with The Difficult Bride competing for honours in the Orizzonti section. The film stars Zainin Karim Chowdhury in the lead role, while Azmeri Haque Badhon and Sunerah Binte Kamal appear in guest roles. Shatabdi Wadud, Saberi Alam, Mohammad Bari and Rikta Nandini Shimu are among the other members of the cast. The film has also been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival, which began last Thursday and will run until September 20. Rubaiyat is scheduled to travel to Toronto from Venice to attend the festival.
