The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has launched a pilot project to collect cow urine from farmers in 15 villages of Bulandshahr district.Around 500 litres of cow urine are currently being collected every day under the initiative. The government plans to purchase cow urine from farmers at Rs 20 per litre in the future.Tanks with a capacity of 200 litres have also been installed in the villages to facilitate collection.According to the project plan, the initiative aims to provide farmers with an additional source of income, create employment opportunities for rural women and support the upkeep of cows that no longer produce milk.Around 300 women have joined the project and have been made shareholders of farmer producer organisations (FPOs). Women assisting with the collection of cow urine are receiving a commission of Rs 2 per litre.The collected cow urine is planned to be used as a raw material for agricultural purposes, including the production of alternatives to chemical fertilisers and other agricultural inputs.If the pilot project proves successful, the Uttar Pradesh government plans to formulate a separate policy to expand the initiative across the state.However, the project has drawn criticism from the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP), which has described it as a “scam” and alleged that the government is undertaking the initiative to raise funds for elections.The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has rejected the allegation, saying the SP has consistently opposed the government's development initiatives.
