Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the government is prioritising quality and affordable housing for low-income people while taking initiatives to reduce population pressure on major cities through planned urbanisation.He made the remarks at a discussion organised at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital on Monday morning to mark World Habitat Day 2026.Tarique Rahman said work on master plans for planned urban development has begun in all districts. The government has also taken steps to establish separate urban development authorities in Sylhet, Mymensingh, Barishal, Cumilla, Rangpur and Narayanganj.The prime minister said ensuring safe, inclusive, climate-resilient and sustainable cities, along with adequate, safe and affordable housing for every citizen, is one of the government’s key priorities. These initiatives will also contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG-11).Earlier, the prime minister planted a sapling of a Sonalu tree on the premises of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre. Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon, State Minister Ahmmed Sohel Manjur, ministry secretary Md Obaidur Rahman and senior officials concerned were present at the event.
